Year 1 EM
“The one thing you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write and draw and build and play and dance and live as only you can.” Neil Gaiman
We have 30 children in 1EM and these children are taught by Mrs Morgan and Mrs Cooper.
We have a topic based approach to our learning and these topics are led by specific texts aimed to engage and inspire creativity in all areas of the curriculum. The children explore these books through reading and role play then use these stories as a starting point for their own writing, art and music. Our year long Science topic, “How Does Your Garden Grow?” looks at the changing seasons and how plants and trees change throughout the year.
In Year 1 there is an emphasis on phonics teaching to help the children to read and spell confidently. Phonics screening tests take place in June which measure the progress the children have made in phonics.
We follow the CPA approach in maths where children are able to develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. They use the skills they have learned to solve problems and look for patterns in numbers.
We aim to give the children in Year 1 rich experiences to enable them to become confident writers, mathematicians, artists, musicians, historians, geographers and scientists.
Teachers base their planning on the “I” and “WE” ASPIRE curriculum which takes into account the children’s interests, too. This academic year, children will be covering the following units of learning:
Autumn 1 – Three Generations
Autumn 2 – Three Generations and Christmas
Spring 1 – Once Upon A Time
Spring 2 – Journeys
Summer 1 – Looking After Myself
Summer 2 – What’s It Made Of?
